Is Herbal Medicine Safe?
Clinical-grade herbal medicine, held to the highest standards of safety, purity, and transparency.
Our Standards
Every Poppy formula is reviewed for safety and prescribed by a licensed practitioner. Prescriptions are filled by licensed U.S. pharmacies using clinical-grade whole-herb extracts sourced from manufacturers that follow FDA current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs).
Each batch is accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis (COA) confirming herb identity and purity, with screening for heavy metals, pesticide residues, and microbial contaminants. Together, these safeguards support consistent quality, purity, and clinical oversight.
Practitioner Oversight
Every formula is reviewed and prescribed by a U.S.-licensed practitioner trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and herbal medicine. Practitioners evaluate your health history, current medications, and potential herb–drug interactions to ensure each formula is appropriate and safe for ongoing use.
Poppy works with practitioners who hold national board certification through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), reflecting standardized training in herbal medicine and clinical practice.
Our Process
Held to Rigorous Quality Standards
Every formula is sourced, reviewed, and prepared through partners held to strict quality and safety requirements.
Herb Processing Standards
Formulas prepared for Poppy follow controlled manufacturing standards and are produced in sealed, temperature-controlled environments.
During extraction, only purified, softened water is used to preserve the integrity of each herb.
Contaminants & Microbial Safety
Our sourcing partners test every batch of herbs for common environmental contaminants, including pollutants, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and pesticides, before ingredients are approved for use.
Heavy Metal Safety
Poppy works exclusively with manufacturers whose herb extracts are individually tested for heavy metals, including arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury.
Solvent-free processing
Our partners adhere to strict solvent-free processing standards, including:
- No acetone
- No hexane
- No industrial solvents of any kind
Microbial testing standards
Microbial testing is conducted by partner laboratories in accordance with U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) guidelines.
Herbs are screened for organisms such as:
- E. coli
- Salmonella spp.
- Enterobacteriaceae
- And other harmful microbes before approval for use.
Testing includes internal quality controls and independent third-party laboratory testing conducted in the U.S. prior to compounding.
Validated laboratory testing
Our partners ensure each metal is evaluated independently using scientifically validated analytical methods aligned with U.S. Pharmacopeia and World Health Organization (WHO) standards.
Batches that do not meet these standards are rejected.
How Herbal Products Are Regulated
Dietary supplements
Many herbal products sold in the U.S. are regulated as dietary supplements and must follow FDA current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) for quality, purity, and safety.
Customized or practitioner-guided formulas
Herbal formulas that are customized or modified for an individual are regulated differently than over-the-counter products. These formulas must be prescribed by a licensed practitioner for a specific patient and are not sold directly to the public. Poppy’s care model is built around individualized, practitioner-guided formulations.
Clinical-grade herbal care
Poppy works exclusively with clinical-grade herbal formulas delivered through licensed practitioners and U.S. pharmacies. This model supports appropriate clinical oversight, reduces the risk of misuse, and ensures care is delivered within FDA and state practice standards.
Why safety matters
Herbal medicine can be highly effective—but like any meaningful treatment, it requires clinical judgment. Herbs may be natural, but they are also potent, and the right formula depends on the individual, their health history, and how herbs may interact with medications or other considerations.
That’s why every Poppy formula is reviewed and designed by a licensed, board-certified herbal practitioner. Formulas are selected, combined, and adjusted thoughtfully to support safety and long-term care.
Frequently asked questions
Are herbs safe to take with other medications or supplements?
Yes. Your practitioner reviews your health history and current medications to help ensure your formula is appropriate and safe.
Be sure to include all prescriptions and supplements in your intake so your practitioner can make any necessary adjustments.
Are herbs tested for safety?
Yes. All herbs used in a Poppy formula are tested for purity, potency, and safety, including screening for pesticides, pollutants, microbial contaminants, and heavy metals.
Each herb undergoes multiple layers of testing—including independent third-party testing in the United States. Only batches that meet strict quality standards are used in formulas.
Do you test for heavy metals?
Yes. Our herbal extract suppliers test for individual heavy metals—including lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium—using scientifically validated methods aligned with U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) and World Health Organization (WHO) standards.
Why do I need a prescription?
In the U.S., dietary supplements are regulated by the FDA under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) and must follow current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs).
Customized or compounded herbal formulas—those prepared for an individual—require a prescription from a licensed practitioner and are not sold over the counter. Many professional-grade herbal formulas are intentionally distributed only through licensed practitioners to support safe, appropriate use.
Who designs my formula?
Poppy formulas are designed and reviewed by licensed practitioners with active U.S. state licensure and NCCAOM board certification in Chinese Herbology (Dipl. C.H.) or Oriental Medicine (Dipl. O.M.).
Each practitioner has formal training in Chinese herbal medicine and clinical experience in pattern differentiation and formula modification. Every formula is human-reviewed to ensure it is appropriate, safe, and aligned with Traditional Chinese Medicine principles.
